Yan Shou Gong Netherlands

My story

Hi, My name is Gary, let me introduce myself and tell you how I became a martial arts enthusiast.

I am originally from a small fishing village in the North East of England. After years of traveling and bouncing back and forth from New Zealand for almost a decade I decided to try a period in the Netherlands, that was over ten years ago and I'm still here, having settled down and started a family. I am not your average Qi Gong instructor, I have come to this point after years of studying movement in various disciplines. One of these was sheep shearing, which I did professionally for 20 years. Now I know what you're thinking, "what does sheep shearing have to do with Qi gong and martial arts?"

Frankly, the answer is hard to explain, but it took a lot of hard work, discipline, and learning to be calm and relaxed while doing a really tough job. That's how I learned to work with the sheep instead of against them. As crazy as it may sound, this has a lot in common with martial arts.

Over the years I was introduced to martial arts and flow arts (poi), but with my traveling lifestyle it was hard to commit to anything long term. Since my move to the Netherlands I got to know my instructor; Lyndon Oudsten who in turn introduced me to his teacher Master Yap Boh Heong from Malaysia. After seeing with my own eyes the authenticity of the art they were teaching, I was hooked and have been training ever since. I have personally experienced so many benefits from it and I would love to share these benefits with the rest of the world.

So with this insight, I hung up my sheep shearing shoes and started teaching and training every chance I got. For me personally, training has changed my life forever. My posture started to improve remarkably, after 20 years of shearing and being bent over touching my toes for 8-10 hours a day, it soon became clear that my back needed some attention first. I could never have imagined what happened next.

As my skeleton adapted to this workout, I could now see my entire frame change and so did my thinking. I became happier, healthier and a more balanced person than ever. Training in this particular form of martial arts has completely changed my life. That's why I really want to share it with the rest of the world so that other people can also benefit from it. I feel incredibly privileged to be able to share this with the rest of the world. I have really made my profession out of my hobby and I couldn't be happier!
